Commemorative Pinotage 2021
R500
The privileged minority that recently tasting one of the few remaining bottles of the original 1959 Lanzerac Pinotage describe the wine with notes of tobacco and tea, together with vibrant black berry and cherry fruit. Harmonious and expressive with maturity but also freshness. Sixty years later the re-incarnation of this wine display some of the same characteristics as the original. Red- and black berries with hints of tea-leaf combined with an earthiness and finishing with soft silky tannins speaks to their ancestors namely Pinot Noir and Cinsaut.

Stellenbosch, South Africa
Single Vineyard
A tribute to the original 1959 Lanzerac Pinotage, the Commemorative Pinotage 2021 offers red and black berry aromas with hints of tea leaf and earthy depth. Elegant and expressive, it finishes with soft, silky tannins that reflect its Pinot Noir and Cinsaut heritage.
Pair it with flame-grilled ribeye topped with garlic butter, slow-braised lamb shank, sticky barbecue ribs, or a smoky venison pie for a rich and memorable experience. For something unexpected, try it with truffle-infused mushroom risotto, duck with berry reduction or dark chocolate fondant. Each pairing highlights the wine’s velvety texture and warm spice notes.
Grapes from this single block, planted in 1953 on Bellevue, arrived in bins at the Lanzerac Cellar where the bunches were sorted and destemmend and then the berries were sorted again before a light crunch. Fermentation took place in small open fermenters with punch downs four times a day. When fermented dry the wine was racked and the skins was pressed in a small basket press. Maturation took place over 18 months in 300 litre French Oak barrels. Age of the barrels range from 2nd fill to 4th fill.
